Dear Social empowerment enthusiast
A new toilet is needed every one and a half seconds! Some 111 million toilets are needed by 2019 to reach the goal of a Clean India (Swachh Bharat) set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Even if this goal is achieved, it will not be enough. Clearly as challenging is the cultural change needed to ensure that the Indian population makes effective use of these new sanitation facilities.
Like a computer, useful only when hardware and software are intimately synced, the success of the Clean India Mission requires both the hardware (toilets and infrastructure) and the software (the training to use it correctly and consistently). The reality of achieving Clean India begins most critically with the cultural changes of nearly one billion people in some 650,000 Indian villages.
There is no magic solution to achieving the necessary training and cultural change simultaneously across the huge Indian sub-continent. But there must be a start. SKILLS2015, organized by Rural Economic and Educational Development Society (REEDS) and Life Skills and Livelihood Skills (LSLSI), is dedicated to being that start, and the catalyst for change.
Life Skills & Livelihood conferences are dedicated to achieving the life and livelihood skills necessary for sustainable economic growth for rural India. The third such conference since 2010, SKILLS2015 is dedicated to the training agenda necessary to make the Clean India a success.
History makes it abundantly clear that without proper sanitation there is no health, and without health, education is impossible, and without education there can be no sustainable economy to lift the poor out of their desperate poverty. SKILLS2015, to be held in Hyderabad, India, is timed to coincide with the UN’s World Toilet Day, November 19.
As Chair of SKILLS2015, it is my pleasure to invite you to take part in the conference. Your presence and insights will help ignite the revolution of Swachh Bharat. The conference agenda and more information are available at www.Skills2015.org.
Thank you for your consideration of participation in SKILLS2015. It promises to be a major pivot point for a Clean India.
